If asked what has changed the most over the past several decades, I would answer that perhaps it is the dramatic increase in the number of choices available in life, together with the greater freedom to make those choices.(注1)
(Omitted)
I believe we have entered an age in which the paths laid out by parents and social conventions about how one “ought to live” have greatly diminished, and all kinds of ways of living are accepted.(注2) Each person has become able to choose their own way of life on their own responsibility.
Yet the reality is that this situation cannot necessarily be said to make people happy. As the number of choices has increased, so too have doubts such as, “Is this really the right choice...?” Some become so uncertain that they cannot make a choice, while others make one and then think it was a mistake... The number of such people has increased.
Perhaps by making a choice in order to gain something, I may have lost something else. Perhaps there was another kind of happiness, but I may have missed the chance to attain it. Could it be that this is not who I was really meant to be?
Comparing ourselves with others, we begin to wonder whether our own life is inferior or perhaps a failure. In this way, we corner ourselves and lose confidence in our own lives. Hasn't this produced a great many people like that?
In fact, perhaps it would be easier to be told, “This is the only way to live.” That is because all we would have to do is live as fully as we can within it. But if we are told that there are countless ways to live, I think it is only natural to feel uncertain.
Still, what matters in the end is probably not what we do, but how we live. Whatever choice we make, no one can determine that it is definitively the correct answer. If anyone can decide that, it is only the person themselves, by convincing themselves that their choice was right.
If so, isn't what matters that the person can genuinely feel that their choice was a good one, or, whatever that choice may have been, sincerely feel that they worked hard and did their very best?
Do not let the abundance of choices in life confuse you.(注3) Do not judge your life by what you happen to be doing right now. What matters is not what you are doing, but how you are living. And the way you live is something you can change starting right now.
