The “Accident Information Data Bank (DB),” which centrally compiles online information about consumer accidents such as those involving familiar household appliances and playground equipment, as well as foreign objects found in food, will begin full-scale operation on April 1.(注1) Anyone will be able to search and view the information from their own computer.(注2) In addition to the Consumer Affairs Agency, the DB is joined by five ministries—the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry; the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism; the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries; the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare; and the Ministry of Justice—as well as the National Institute of Technology and Evaluation (NITE), the National Consumer Affairs Center, and others. About 15,000 cases dating from April of last year onward have already been registered. By entering a product name such as “heater” or “bicycle,” the type of harm such as “fire” or “burn,” and the time period, a list of accidents will be displayed.(注3) _______By clicking on an individual accident, users can view information such as (1) the date and location, (2) the circumstances of the accident, and (3) the number, ages, and sexes of those killed or injured, within a range that does not allow individuals to be identified. Lists of accidents involving the same product or similar accidents will also be displayed. Cases such as “eyelash extensions” and “pressure cookers,” where many injuries occur in a concentrated manner and warnings are needed, as well as accidents in which children or elderly people are killed or injured, are also posted in a “Noteworthy Accident Information List” for quick access.(注4)(注5)(注6) To understand consumers’ interests, the DB also provides a “Search Keyword Ranking” showing the top five searches.(注7)
