Everyone knows that crows are intelligent. By now, it may even be regarded as common knowledge. Whatever device people set up to keep crows away from garbage, the crows quickly see through it, so many people have probably experienced firsthand the thought, “Crows really are smart.” It seems as though the crows can see through ① human intentions, which leaves us impressed.
Then what kind of ability does being “smart” refer to?
Among humans, we often say “You're smart” to someone with an outstanding memory. In this respect, birds are regarded as animals with such poor memories that people say they “forget after taking three steps.” However, that does not apply to crows.
Sugita Laboratory at Utsunomiya University conducts various experiments to investigate the abilities of crows. For example, if photographs of 15 people's faces are attached to containers, with the crows' favorite dog food placed in only one of them for the birds to memorize, they achieve a correct-answer rate of nearly 100%.(注1) More surprisingly, even after a gap of about three weeks, their performance hardly changes. Far from forgetting after three steps, they do not forget even after three weeks. However, matsukakesu, a member of the crow family, can remember as many as ten thousand food-storage locations, so perhaps this task is child's play for crows.
People who can accurately assess a situation and act accordingly are also considered intelligent. Crows show outstanding ability in this respect as well.
When observing birds raising their young, researchers set up a small tent called a “blind” near the nest and hide inside it. Since the observers cannot be seen, most birds will continue raising their young without becoming wary.
With crows, however, it does not work that way. When I observed hashibutogarasu crows raising their young in Shibuya, it was extremely difficult. With most birds, if observers enter the blind while the birds are away, the birds return to the nest surprisingly quickly. If they do not return for a long time, two people enter the blind together and then only one comes out. The bird then assumes that no one remains inside and returns to the nest. This is because birds cannot do arithmetic. Even this method cannot fool crows. It makes one wonder whether they might actually be able to count. On that occasion, ② in the end we were unable to observe them by any means other than an unattended camera. This is a real example showing that crows are superior to other birds in their ability to assess situations accurately and avoid danger.
In fact, this very ability of crows has become an obstacle to research. The first step in bird research is to identify individual birds by attaching markers such as leg bands.(注2) To do that, the birds have to be captured, but with crows, ③ this does not go as intended. It is certainly possible to capture crows. However, the birds that enter traps are usually young ones, while adult crows are almost never caught. Capturing adult crows for research is practically impossible. It is said that even one of Japan's leading bird researchers, known as a master at capturing birds, gave up when it came to crows.
